GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
To safely and efficiently perform manual labor in collecting recyclables from residences and buildings in Saint Paul, Lauderdale, Roseville, Arden Hills and Saint Louis Park. Along with recording route data, providing excellent customer service and education materials, hauling to and tipping at the material recovery facility.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Operate an International or Hino chassis equipped with a GS or Labrie Top-Select body for the collection of recyclable materials from residential homes and various building locations and transport them for recycling to a material recovery facility (MRF).
  2. Begin workday promptly at 6:30 a.m. and work until all routes are completed.
  3. Follow a scheduled or authorized modified route as required.
  4. Operate a two-way radio to communicate with and receive instructions from a supervisor or dispatcher.
  5. Responsible for performing daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle and perform minor maintenance such as monitoring fluid levels, checking for leaks, vehicle lighting, belts, air brake system function, tire pressure and other functions necessary for safe and efficient operation, recording results on Vehicle Condition Reports (VCRs).
  6. Responsible for washing and cleaning interior of vehicle as required.
  7. Report malfunctions and repair requirements to fleet maintenance personnel and record on VCR.
  8. Tag containers to inform customers of issues involving their set-out of recyclables.
  9. Fill out and turn in driver reports and VCRs every day, and fill out driver hour logs.
  10. Keep informed of road and weather conditions.
  11. Provide customer service in a professional and respectful manner when dealing with the public.
  12. Responsible for communicating accidents, near misses, incidents and injuries immediately to your supervisor, as well as completing all necessary reports.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid Class B Commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement.
  2. Clean driving record. Applicants are subject to approval by employer’s insurance company for coverage. Must be 25 years of age or older.
  3. Medical exams are part of the qualification requirements to maintain a Commercial Driver's License.
  4. Pre-employment medical exams and pre-employment mandatory drug testing is required prior to employment. Subject to all DOT requirements for the operation of commercial straight bodied vehicles with a GVW over 26,000 lbs.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum 1 year driving a Class B commercial vehicle with air brakes.
  2. Experience driving the above on city streets and within residential neighborhoods while making multiple stops, tight turns and/or backing up.
  3. Knowledge of the Twin Cities Metro Area roads.
  4. Residential recycling or garbage collection experience preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Good communication via a two-way radio.
  2. Legible handwriting.
  3. Ability to keep records of relevant route data.
  4. Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  5. Work courteously and tactfully with customers and employees.
  6. Effective communication skills in English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Outdoor work environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.
  2. Subject to seasonal and adverse weather conditions.
  3. Subject to noise from equipment operation.
  4. Must drive a vehicle to conduct work.
  5. Must perform heavy physical labor; lifting and carrying heavy objects repeatedly for extended periods of time.
  6. Will be required to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  7. Must climb in and out of truck; bending at the waist; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; carrying; pushing and pulling. Need to be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly for extended periods of time.
  8. Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of buttons and levers; and use of feet to control pedals on equipment.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Zero-Waste Education Specialist assists Eureka Recycling’s customer relations and education team in educating the public about zero waste and recycling issues, engaging diverse groups of people in conversations about waste reduction and zero waste and by assuring excellent customer service to residents that Eureka Recycling serves. Specializes in communication with and education of the Hmong or Somali communities in the cities we serve.

This work involves staffing Eureka Recycling’s Zero-Waste Hotline, attending community events to talk with residents about zero waste and working with other members of the customer relations and education staff to coordinate customer service issues with operations.

This position requires a passionate and organized individual who has experience or interest in informal or community education, customer/community service and is dedicated to recycling and waste reduction and to helping others be inspired to help the environment by reducing and eliminating waste.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Educate residents on all zero-waste issues via Eureka Recycling’s Zero-Waste Hotline using both English and Hmong or Somali languages.
  2. Actively participate in off-site community events (during and/or after regular work hours) to educate people about recycling and other zero-waste issues.
  3. Work with other members of the customer relations & education team to provide excellent customer service to all residents and other customers.
  4. Assist the customer service coordinator in managing customer service issues as assigned. Responsibilities may include some or all of the following: i. Document service issues and forward information to the appropriate staff in customer relations or in other departments ii. Provide direct customer service and dispute resolution to Eureka Recycling’s customers. Address immediate concerns such as accidents, service issues, and other complaints in a timely and thorough manner. iii. Work with customer relations coordinator and operations staff to coordinate resolution of customer service issues and assist in training operations staff on Eureka Recycling’s mission, appropriate procedures and policies  
  5. Provide verbal and written Hmong or Somali language communication of programs, organizational initiatives and priorities to all customers, partners and employees who speak Hmong or Somali as their primary language.
  6. Work with other staff to identify, develop, deliver and evaluate the customer service trainings for all staff, including the operations (collection) staff and hotline staff.
  7. Maintain Access Databases and assure data is accurately entered and tracked and reported. 
  8. Understand, demonstrate, and support the mission of the organization.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned

QUALITIES:
This position requires a motivated individual who is enthusiastic about working to educate and motivate people about the benefits of zero waste and to provide excellent customer service to residents served by Eureka Recycling’s programs. This person must be a quick learner, be skilled at engaging people in informal discussions in English and Hmong or Somali about issues and be comfortable, competent and experienced working with diverse groups of people.
 
This person must be effective in meeting, engaging, and communicating with diverse individuals and groups. This position also requires a person with an interest and skills in effectively managing and translating complex ideas and concepts into compelling and motivating messages, and communicating those messages to diverse audiences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Associates degree in Community Relations, Communications, Environmental Studies, Education, or related field. BS/BA preferred.
  2. Two years’ experience in customer service, preferably for a non-profit environmental organization, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Strong ability to effectively articulate ideas through both individual verbal conversations and written communication in both English and Hmong or Somali languages.
  4. Ability to establish effective working relationships with the Hmong or Somali communities.
  5. Experience in understanding and developing an effective work relationship between the customer service and operations functions of an organization.
  6. Experience successfully balancing multiple tasks simultaneously with an eye to detail and record keeping in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  7. Accomplished computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and database skills. Experience using Access database software helpful but not required.
  8. Commitment to the environment and to working with community-based organizations and culturally diverse communities.
  9. A thorough grasp of and commitment to the organization’s mission.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ability to travel efficiently and in a timely manner to off-site meetings during and/or after work hours. 20% travel required, same-day and in-town. (Mileage will be reimbursed.)
  2. Ability to lift 30 pounds occasionally. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Work will require occasional weekend and/or evening work. Occasional lifting and hauling of recycling bins and community education materials will be involved.

INTERNSHIPS AT EUREKA RECYCLING

Eureka Recycling has an organization-wide commitment to hosting interns. Our board, presidents, and staff recognize the enthusiasm, talent, and results that interns bring to our organization and are dedicated to providing students with meaningful work experience. Our internship program is overseen by a designated staff person and includes a formal orientation and training, written workplans, mid-internships meetings with other interns, exit interviews, and evaluations with interns. Our internship program is grounded in a project-based model in which our intern workplans are centered on meaningful projects that directly impact the work of our organization.

DESCRIPTION:
Each spring and fall Eureka Recycling organizes a recycled paper cooperative purchasing project, which gives local organizations, individuals, and businesses a chance to close the loop in recycling by purchasing high quality, 100% postconsumer recycled office paper at a reduced cost.

This intern will play a significant role helping to coordinate this small business within Eureka Recycling. A successful candidate will coordinate communications, sales and order tracking for the spring 2012 program, including promotional emails, fact sheets, website updates, as well as tracking all orders and maintaining contact with customers to guarantee delivery or pick-up, and planning for the next co-op by identifying potential customers and helping make the co-op more well known. Input of recycled paper co-op data to a contact management database will also be a portion of this work. In addition, this intern will assist with other customer relations and education projects.

Eureka Recycling is seeking a self-directed, organized individual with strong written and verbal communication skills, who is interested in learning how to manage a sustainable business that examines the triple bottom line of cost, customer service and environmental benefit as well as community-based efforts to promote zero waste.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in coordinating the spring recycled paper cooperative project including determining local suppliers and prices, promoting the program, tracking customers and orders, monitoring inventory, making pickup and delivery arrangements with customers and writing
    a summary of the project. Work with program staff to make decisions about the project and offer input for the future of the paper cooperative.
  2. Organize and prepare customer data (using MS Excel and Access) for contact management.
  3. Assist in developing a plan to improve sales.
  4. Coordinate mailings and perform general office duties (photocopying, assemble handouts, data entry, assist with mailings) as needed to complete above responsibilities.
  5. Assist with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero-waste event, and if necessary, participate in sorting waste or conducting visual audits to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.
  6. Attend staff trainings on recycling issues.
  7. Complete other projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Interest in and commitment to Eureka’s zero-waste mission and its programs.
  2. Interest in understanding the development and management of socially responsible, entrepreneurial businesses that respect the environment and the customer while also generating revenue.
  3. Experience in organizing projects and demonstrated ability to carry out tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  4. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to research and present information in an organized and concise format.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work scheduled hours and arrive on time.

DESCRIPTION:

Eureka Recycling is recognized as a national leader in the development and management of highly successful multifamily and apartment building recycling programs.

Recycling is one of the most important actions any person can take to reduce waste and protect the environment. Multifamily building residents and property managers however often face unique and difficult challenges in setting up programs that all people residing in the buildings can understand and take part in. This position will work with the Customer Relations and Education team to support the successful set-up and management of multifamily recycling programs in the cities of St Paul, Roseville and Lauderdale.

A successful candidate for this internship will have an interest and passion for environmental education and equity.  They will be excited about opportunities to work with residents and property managers to examine specific challenges faced at each property. They will also work together with property management, residents and Eureka Recycling staff to create solutions to ensure residents in the building has access to the recycling program and a clear understanding of how to recycle in their building. Once a plan is in place to receive support from the property manager, the person in this position will identify outreach needs for individual owners, managers, and residents in apartment buildings, condominiums, and town homes. This intern will also assist staff in developing procedural and operational efficiencies in the management of various aspects of the multifamily program. By having direct contact with the public, this intern will provide excellent outreach and customer service to increase awareness of the various social, environmental and financial benefits of recycling to help motivate residents and property managers to continue to create and manage successful recycling programs.

Eureka Recycling is seeking an energetic, dedicated, and articulate individual.This internship is ideal for someone looking to gain experience working in a nonprofit organization and is interested in learning more about building community partnerships and educating residents about the benefits of recycling.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Engage property managers and motivated residents of multifamily properties to create and maintain successful recycling programs using tools, training and methodologies provided.
  2. Work with the Zero-Waste Education Coordinator to analyze information about apartment buildings and choose buildings to target with outreach or needs for updates.
  3. Work with the Zero-Waste Education Coordinator to adjust logistics of service (cart numbers and frequency of service) and recycling needs based on building performance in an effort to support the success of the recycling program at each property.
  4. Fulfill requests for education materials such as posters and flyers.
  5. Work with the Zero-Waste Education Coordinator to directly connect with property management to ensure continued communication and to provide recycling information.
  6. Assist with office and administrative tasks as needed to complete above responsibilities.
  7. Attend resident meetings to help explain the recycling program and inspire people to participate in the program and see the benefits of recycling for the environment, the economy and the community.
  8. Support Customer Relations and Education staff by updating internal resources and information.
  9. Assist with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero-waste event.
  10. Participate in educational and outreach events as needed.
  11. Complete other projects as assigned.
     
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Eureka Recycling is seeking an individual who is outgoing and organized with strong communication and research skills to provide assistance to the communications department staff. This internship is ideal for a person who is interested in learning how to carry out a communications plan that supports the education, advocacy, and outreach initiatives of an environmental nonprofit organization. This intern will work with the communications team on community outreach events and support Eureka Recycling’s work on preventing wasted food, including research and organizing of information, as well as other communications and outreach-related projects. S/he will come away from this experience with an understanding of the development and implementation of community-based communications, experience in research, organizing information, project management, leadership, and team collaboration.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in planning and implementation of community outreach events, including Eureka Recycling’s booth at the 2012 Living Green Expo in May.
  2. Assist with development of education and website content, data, research, and other support as needed for the organization’s emerging work on preventing wasted food.
  3. Research organizational priority topics for web content and external and internal reports.
  4. Assist in implementing aspects of Eureka Recycling’s communication plan by contacting community television stations and local papers to identify primary contacts, schedules, and areas of focus.
  5. Under the direction of the communication team, disseminate information to engage and inform our constituents on various issues.
  6. Organizing and updating contact lists, both to help communicate our messages and inform work on a contact management database
  7. Assist in organizing production and content files.
  8. Perform general office duties (filing, data entry, mailings, photocopies, etc.) as needed to complete responsibilities.
  9. Attend staff trainings on recycling and zero-waste issues when possible.

  5. Computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet.No graphic design, database, or web development software knowledge is necessary.

  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work scheduled hours and arrive on time.
  9. Interest in the environment and working with community-based organizations. Experience or interest in community building, community organizing, outreach, or public education. Interest in Eureka Recycling's zero-waste mission.
